"Martin van Creveld ranks high among military historians, and given the changes in technology since Napoleonic Times, his work is a necessary supplement to Clausewitz." (Jerry Pournelle)

The Art of War by Sun Tzu and On War by Carl von Clausewitz are known to everyone who studies war. But in the approximately 2,327 years that separated man's two most famous works of military tactics and strategy, a considerable number of less well-known works were published. Some, such as those written by Vauban and Douhet, were focused on specific aspects of war while others, like Onasander and Jomini, wrote works that were more general in nature. But all of them were written with the objective of permitting generals and other leaders of men to wage war more effectively.

There are few better suited to write the history of strategy and military thought than Dr. Martin van Creveld, who has been a significant contributor to the literature of war. A professor emeritus at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Dr. van Creveld is one of the world's leading writers on military history and strategy, with a special interest in the future of war. He is fluent in Hebrew, German, Dutch, and English and has authored more than 20 books, including the influential Technology and War 2000 BC to the Present (1988), The Transformation of War (1991), and The Culture of War (2010). He is known for his development of the concept of "nontrinitarian" warfare as well as contributing two books to the 4GW canon.

Featuring a foreword by Dr. Jerrry Pournelle, A History of Strategy From Sun Tzu to William S. Lind begins with the Chinese military literature, then reviews the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine works before proceeding to the Middle Ages. From Machiavelli and Montecuccoli to Guibert and Frederick the Great, van Creveld chronicles the gradual transition from medieval to Napoleonic warfare and onward into the nuclear age and the rise of ISIS.

A History of Strategy From Sun Tzu to William S Lind (Audible Audio Edition) Martin van Creveld Jon Mollison Castalia House Books

Outstanding introduction and overview of the major strategists through history. Creveld assembled a comprehensive overview and provides a great starting point for deeper study of those strategists that pique your intererest (including a full bibliography of referenced works). As a career military man I was impressed (or perhaps taken aback) by the number of strategists I was not familiar with --- and sometimes with the opinion Creveld held that differed from my professors and mentors.

A History of Strategy From Sun Tzu to William S Lind (Audible Audio Edition) Martin van Creveld Jon Mollison Castalia House Books Reviews

I am a fan of Martin Van Creveld. In this book he walks you through ancient strategist up to modern times giving short essays on strategy and how it has evolved over time. The book makes a great introduction to strategy.
The book was both interesting and accessible. Given my knowledge level on the subject and tendency to try and make myself read more academic books than I'm always able to enjoy, I was afraid that this one would be a challenge to get through. But I found it both entertaining and instructive.
I may be doing this book an injustice with four stars. It is *very* readable even for a tyro like me. I find the subject matter slightly dry, but that's a personal quibble. It is also the reason for the four stars. I was looking for an intro to strategy and tactics. This one is hard to beat.
A very good summary of the contributions to military strategy over the centuries. Well written and brought to my attention a few writers I didn't know enough about before. My only quibble would be that I'd have liked to see much more detail about their strategic contributions in addition to the historical contexts and summary information, but this works as a good overview.
those who don't learn from history.. probably didn't learn from anything else either....
The great importance of this book is that it gives a good overview of strategies and differentiates them from tactics. This gives the reader a good opportunity to not only learn the difference, but the rationale of various strategies. Then the reader can delve deeper into specifics to understand war and its manifold manifestations. An excellent starting point.
I read this a few months back and enjoyed it tremendously. I had never read about military history or strategy before, but this well written introduction opened an intellectual door for me. I find myself reading far more about history in general because of this book. Can't recommend enough for anyone with even a passing interest in military strategy and history.
