In the front cover of this book there is a blurb from me saying that Jeff O’Brien is really, really fun. Well, I read this book, and you know what, I WAS RIGHT, THIS DUDE IS REALLY REALLY FUNNY. A completely irreverent goofy horror sex comedy that plays out like Porky’s meets The Evil Dead. There’s something in here to offend nearly everyone; O’Brien always brings the goofy goods!
This one was a lot of crazy, depraved fun. Lots of sexual content amongst the wackiness, but I wouldn't quite go as far as to classify it at Bizarro erotica, as there was also more focus on plot than just weird sex.
Oh and Satan was hilarious. I think he was my favorite character... not something I imagined I'd say, but there it is.
If you like a lot of comedy and Bizarro fiction, this story is for you.
Still, the Bigboobenstein series remains my favorite of this author's work.
You ever get the feeling that someone in the world just "gets" what fun is supposed to be. Like genuinely understands what the word fun is and how to make it a reality.
That's this book. Jeff did it again here, making absolute perviness and rampant laughs like the embodiment of all bawdy delirious excellence with Heart Shaved Box.
Jeff makes memorable characters as ever, and throws them out in a mix of infernal pandemonium in a context that would make Lloyd Kaufman and Seymore Butts applaud in laughter and applause.
This book made for a thoroughly blue and grin ear to ear read.
Jeff O'Brien writes characters that most people can relate with and empathize. I could picture people I knew in High School acting out the various roles and felt in familiar territory in this wholesome book. I learned a lot in High School both in ethical standards and book knowledge.
I found this to be an educational book. In this book we learn that teenagers with raging hormones contemplate the virtues of religious based abstinence versus other sexual practices. We learn that the Devil must be a mathematician because he can count up to a Brazilian. Witches love beauticians but can't trust barbers. Religions have many viewpoints upon hair care. I learned a lot.
This reminded me of the time when I was discussing the activities of the then current Surgeon General, Joycelyn Elders, with a Southern Gentleman. I thought she had a valid point in discussing sex education, masturbation, and safe sex practices as part of health education for our youth. The Gentleman I was discussing this with however felt that this was morally reprehensible and prepared himself for fisticuffs. I asked if he was basing his reaction upon actual standards for better health education in the country or a religious viewpoint and he claimed that it was for both. I reminded him that his religion of choice was harboring and defending serial child-molesters. This is the point where my wife thought I should find a different place to talk to people and we left.
That was also an educational moment but not as entertaining and fun as this book. There may be some similar ideas presented here. Apparently, the Devil is in the details.
I've been waiting for this for quite awhile. I saw the cover and thought hey, that chick looks like a sluttier version of Velma from Scooby-Doo. The book took awhile to come out. Seems Jeff had writers block or something. He also got a new dog which probably delayed the process a bit too. After what seemed like an eternity started writing again and the book was finally finished. He was kind enough to give me an advanced copy to review and as I stared at that sexy cover I wondered if they writer's block messed with his head. Is this going to suck? What if it sucks?
The good news here is that Box doesn't suck. Not one bit. For O'Brien fans that's a good thing, and this may actually be the best book he's written so far. It's also his most offensive. If you're at all squeamish when people make fun of religion, talk about vaginas, and sex, well you are going to hate Heart Shaved Box. This one starts out pretty straight forward and them as novel winds down it seems as if he's lost his mind, or maybe had one of his dogs sit down and write some of this. I bet it was Falcor, he looks like the kind of dog that would write a book like this,
Despite the offensiveness of the plot this is a lot of fun to read. That's just Jeff's style. While it may seem as if he's trying hard to offend you, he's just a guy writing some decent B-rate fiction that moves quickly and keeps you entertained. He's the kind of writer that doesn't follow the normal rules of fiction and that's what makes him such a good writer. Box is at times laugh out loud funny and absurd. It's not for everyone and Jeff doesn't try and be something he isn't. He creates characters that you sometimes cringe at, but then you end up cheering for them. How many books do you know that poke fun at Catholicism, and throw in some lesbian sex? Not too many. Heart Shaved Box is a book that you either love or hate. There's no middle ground. He never plays it safe, and writes whatever the hell he wants, and I say thank God that Jeff writes this kind of stuff. We need guys like this to keep us entertained and show us that we shouldn't take everything so damn seriously. God Bless you Jeff for keeping the American dream alive. I still think Falcor wrote this though.
This is a lovely sex romp involving Lucifer as the good guy and Jesus and the Three Wise Men as leering perverts. This contains one of my favorite sex scenes ever. If you're a scumbag like me, you need this in your life.
This is absolutely full of light, naughty fun. The story is inventive and engaging. I picked it up and steamed right through. O'Brien's writing is always enjoyable, but perhaps this one even more than usual.
