Nor Many Waters first appeared in 1928. This novel is typical Alec Waugh in its charm and grace, and its shrewd perception of human emotions and profound exploration of human relationships.
Alec Waugh, 1898-1981, was a British novelist born in London and educated at Sherborne Public School, Dorset. Waugh's first novel, The Loom of Youth (1917), is a semi-autobiographical account of public school life that caused some controversy at the time and led to his expulsion. Waugh was the only boy ever to be expelled from The Old Shirburnian Society.
Despite setting this record, Waugh went on to become the successful author of over 50 works, and lived in many exotic places throughout his life which later became the settings for some of his texts. He was also a noted wine connoisseur and campaigned to make the cocktail party a regular feature of 1920s social life.

It takes place in a London with a culture of decency practically forgotten. Two thoroughly decent chaps in a divorce tussle over the wife of one of them. She finally decides that she would be damaging to the man she wants to run off with, and returns to her husband. The plotting of a soap opera, or the logic of a prize-winning economist? The woman never really comes to life, for all her 'gay laugh', etc. The author is also a thoroughly decent chap, so much so that you can't tell how far the affair got. Of course, a skilled writer doesn't need to have a sex scene every five pages to create sexual intensity, but Waugh writes as if the characters had nothing going on below the belt at all.
There were some strange verbal and typographical habits that I found off-putting. Waugh writes in a sometimes convoluted style, for example beginning a sentence with 'Than'. Also, he contracts 'he would', for example, as 'he'ld'.
I would have preferred the novel of James and Marian after they had run off, living in the Tangier of the 1920s and 1930s! Still, I kept turning the page and the mores never lost their interest.
